Film Lesson: "Ghandi"

Ghandi Pictures, Images and Photos

Mohandas Gandhi was the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of India during the independence movement. He is known for his use of passive resistance and non violence to fight against the British. Known by many as a symbol of peace. We can see why he is viewed like this during the Indian independent movement.

During the early 1900's India was ruled by Britain. Gandhi led the Indians in the fight to overthrow the British government and obtain India's independence. Although it was a fight for freedom Gandhi led his people without physical violence against the British. For example in the film Gandhi encouraged fellow Indians to burn the passes the British gave them. He was hit with the sticks and kicked around but he did not fight back and continued to burn the passes. Another example as seen in the film was when Gandhi burned all his British made clothes and told his people to burn their clothes too. He encouraged them to make their own clothes therefore they were boycotting against the British and their clothes.

Gandhi's philosophy of non violence was meant for the Indians to gain their freedom without acts of violence or hatred towards the British. Gandhi once said "an eye for eye makes the whole world blind" as we saw in the movie. When the Indians started a riot and killed some soldiers in the film Gandhi was ashamed. He believed so strongly in his philosophy that he began to fast until his people stopped violently fighting for their independence. In the film he also never resisted arrest. He gave himself in to British soldiers without putting up a fight. As we saw he admitted to being guilty as charged to the judge when he was in court. He believed that by using this philosophy the British will realize their cruelness and would give India their independence.

In my opinion i believe that without Gandhi India would have obtained their freedom much more later then they did. I believe without Gandhi the Indian people would have fought with much violence for their freedom. I also believe that the British were influenced by their post war problems to give India their freedom. The British were going through a very rough time although they did win the war. This influenced them to avoid more problems with India.
